What is Depression?
Depression is a common mental disorder the impact’s one’s ability to concentrate and function in everyday life. More than 300 million people are impacted by depression globally, and troubling, less than half of those will receive treatment. A recent study found that in Canada, 11% of Canadians aged 15 to 24 experienced depression at some point in their lives.
While it is normal to experience emotional responses like sadness, depression is prolonged and persistent feelings of hopelessness and loss. There is evidence depression is often accompanied by anxiety. Depression can have several potential symptoms and can take many different forms, including major depression, dysthymia and seasonal affective disorder. In addition to the mental anguish depression causes, it can impact one’s physical health including the ability to sleep, lower the immune system, and causes higher rates of diabetes and osteoporosis. Depression can cause suicidal thoughts and, if left untreated, can lead to suicide.
